Since loosing the internet in October l have written two more novellas about the Eirik character or to be precise l'm finishing off the second of those. Each is around 14-15,000 words. Both are set in 1187 ad, two years after "A curse and a prayer".The first is "Children of the Serpent", the one l'm working on is "The Kraken Awakens".lt would be nice to resurrect Frazetta to do the cover art. But l suspect l'll have to manage it somehow.lt's too bad my old paintings of the character no longer quite fit the historical period these tales are now set in.l've done color drawings but l really have not painted since the 1980's.[All my true paintings were done between 1982 and 1984 with the large pencil renderings of castles and wizards in 1985-86.]Anyway, it's good to be back online.
You artwork is outstanding!! You should view this as a way to get back into the 'groove' of things.
Frazetta's works were always dark, fluid, and visceral. His style was gothic in tone, and yet exciting in story. Your work has more of a elegant, stratified feeling with a Renaissance edge. His work complements yours...
He is 'Dark Ages' and your penmanship is 'Enlightenment'.
l've finished the third Eirik tale, The Kraken Awakes and begun a fourth THE PARTING OF THE WAYS which overlaps the end of the first A CURSE AND A PRAYER.The new one reveals in more depth why he left Galloway before it's rebellion failed. An old enemy returns and a new one is 'born'.[He tends to leave some havoc in his wake and not everyone is forgiving of that.....
These shorter tales serve as background to the novel [Signet...] detailing Eirik's adventures before he reached Acre.l could probably have lengthened all of them but decided against stretching them too much.lt's also less daunting if not every story has to be a novel. How many more there will be depends upon how many l can think up plots for as l know his path from Scotland to the Holy Land. l probably aught to have gone on to a sequel rather than 'preequals'.But there is still a lot more uncertainty about where the characters go after SIGNET and how fast they get there. At some point the get back to Constantinople [Eirik for the first time.]l'm contemplating cameos by Saladin and the Assassins and a return for Richard , the lion hearted.[maybe at the culminant Battle of Arsuff.] Beyond that Eirik has years of adventures ahead, about 40 years worth. His greatest villain is only indirectly introduced in the novel and does not awaken until 1197 [six years after SIGNET.]I have tentatively decided upon a location for his final conflict with the villain [who created the dread grimoire in several of my other novels].lt is an actual now ruined fortress in northwestern lran, once used by a Persian rebel against the Moslem caliphate in Baghdad ca.807-838 ad..By the 1220's the empire that had recently ruled it had been decimated by Ghenghis Khan but the Mongols had withdrawn eastwards in 1223 not to return until the 1240's and 50's.So, there's a slim window with no great power claiming the area and it's local dynasty fell in the year my story concludes . ln between he finds the talismanic sword that becomes his trademark though where, when and how remain up in the air.The sword ultimately belonged to Nauhda, one of the mythic kings of lreland [one of the Tautha de Danaans who later became the 'Fair folk'.]ln between it may have been the 'sword of god' found by Attila the Hun in the mid 5th century ad. and viewed by him as a divine symbol of his mission to conquer. The problem is how it got from lreland to Croatia where he found it and what became of it after his death.lt was presumably buried with him though no one knows where his tomb is as it was carefully hidden.Later Hungarian legend says the blade turned up in the 11th century but the one they point to is far too recent ca.800-1000 ad not prior to the 430's.So the real sord could've been lost after the 11th century and replaced by a 'ringer' or it could still be in Attila's hidden tomb. Were l to use Excalibur instead Richard the lion hearted gave what he said was Excalibur to Tancred of Sicily on the way to the Holy Land in 1191ad.lt seems unlikely he would give away what he thought was the real sword but who can say?Richard's late father, Henry 2, reigned when the infamous tomb of Arthur was opened at Glastonbury. While no blade was mentioned it was probably the claimed find location. What became of that Ecalibur is anyone's guess after Tancred died in 1194.Oh well l'll eventually sort it out, hopefully in this lifetime.....
l found two more 'magic' swords to add to the mix from lrish mythology. One was wielded by Fergus Mac Roich, a king of Ulster and mentor to Cuchulain.lt could blind with it's brightness, cut through anything and had the power to level hills.lt's name, Caledbolc was related to the root for Excalibur. The second was wielded by Cuchulain himself and was called Fragarac.Translated the name could be answerer or retaliator.lt was originally the blade of Mannan Mac Lyr the lrish seagod and patron of the isle of Mann which was named after him.He gave it to the half Danaan Lugh who became their king after defeating the evil giant pirates the Fomori.Lugh gave it to Cuchulain who was reputed to be his son.About 100-150 years later it passed to Conn of a hundred battles, an early lrish high king and inspiration for Conan. This sword could cut anything, control the winds, force the truth out of anyone it was pointed at.lt was also said that a wound from it could not heal. But it does not tell me where it will end up being found.
I learn more history from your posts than I ever did in High School. Ok so you need a reason for the sword to make its way from Ireland to Croatia in the 12th century. The Crusades come to mind. The first Crusade began in 1095 and traditionalists consider it ending around 1291, so that is one possibility for you. The thing I like about this series is you could easily write a dozen books with this character. Like Edgar Rice Burroughs did with both Tarzan and John Carter from Mars.
l just hope l live long enough. His adventures cover more than 40 years between ca. 1184 and 1231 ad.lf l link the sword given to Tancred of Sicily to one of the Celtic mythic blades it was the Crusades that got it there, the third in this case. But to link any of them to the sword of Attila requires it reach Croatia before the 430's.But l'm undecided upon the link to Attila's sword and not entirely comfortable connecting it to Excalibur, despite the similarity of their mythic origins.
Do you recall that in DC comics when it came to the mystical helmet of Dr. Fate that they unearthed an anti-helmet, that was sort of the yang to the yin of Fate's helmet. So perhaps you could create your own myth by suggesting that the sword of Attila is the opposite negative version of Excalibur. Only a suggestion of course.
l'm not sure it will exactly be that but l was considering having two swords, one for the hero and the other for the villain. Of the two the sword of Attila's association with world domination does better fit the villain's desires.
Also, Eirik had gotten whichever sword he used by the time of a big 'encounter' with the villain in 1201.The villain lost both the ring, the codex and his right hand in that battle. So, he not only had motive for revenge but required a new means to obtain it as well as his existing goals.lt might, however, be a subordinate who weilds it ala' the emperor/Darth Vader dynamic since the villain is not a swordsman and had lost his hand.Anyway, we'll see.
Omen: Get in line, I have been working like crazy also. I have two major projects I have to finish and hopefully everything slows down. Haven't had time to log into the board... I actually miss it. It feels good popping my head in to see what's going on.

g40t90yes: Good Morning. Now I am no political activist, but with is going on in today's activist world, I have a question. Last Sunday Vice President Pence walked out of a Colts Football game because the Players took a knee. I would like to read your View about this

g40t90yes: Continue. Now The NFL Owners (Jones-Cowboys, Ross-Dolphins) are going to demand their players stand for the Anthem. Again just thinking out loud. Couple of weeks ago Owners (Jones) knelt with players. Now you are pulling back. Why??

g40t90yes: One more thing. Some people view The NFL Draft and NBA Draft as a modern day or fashionable auction block for black young men. Thoughts!!! Please.

The Muse: Im sure there are going to be a lot of thoughts on this...why not start a thread on the topic under the "chat" board. It will be easier for everyone to read and comment on it there. This shoutbox is kinda cumbersome to have to scroll through to read stuff.

Omen: I don't know... some say time goes around in circles - for me, its just a dreary long squiggly line, in some places in its a smile, in others... its not.
