Often when you have a story idea, your first inclination is to grab your pen (or keyboard) and start writing it down. Makes sense to me. I came across an interesting idea. A Plot outline.
Now I could just say everything that the author of the article said...or I can give you a link to the article. (which I think I shall.) After all, I would do you no good if I did ALL of your research work for you!
The two drafts of my novel I had no type of outline and there were soo many plot holes, inconsistencies, and times that I was just plain stuck it wasn't funny. With this third draft (which is basically scrapped the last two drafts and started over!) I outlined my major plot line and then would do a few chapters ahead as I wrote along. I found that my writing was a lot more productive because I already knew what I was going to write about in each chapter, but still gave myself the creative freedom to pursue a different direction, as long as it was in tune with the major plot line.
justsarah....that is a great start to writing! Just remember that details are important. Once you those plots down, work on your worldbuilding and character building. You can end up with a great story when you put the right amount of effort to it.
The Muse leaves you in a zen cloud of well being, positive energy and creative fire. You find yourself succumbing to the overwhelming urge to write and create.......
Actually, that brings up a question for me. Is there a place that you can have the outline itself critiqued? It in and of itself is pretty much done.D: Well, longer than most publishers want in an outline anyway.
By the way, I actually started to appreciate the outlining process even more than I used to. I just bought a book recently, on outlining your novel. Apparently actually getting to know your character is a big part of the outlining process.:3
I tend to start with outlines but they usually drift off into narrative before l reach the conclusion.Even when l've done a full outline the story often runs off on it's own when l actually write it.Sometimes what l decided in an outline somehow doesn't play out right in the narrative.l usually go back and forth between the actual narrative and plot ruminations.lt's probably why l end up dping so many revised drafts.
l like to try to resolve as many of my stories plotholes as possible before l go to a full narrative though such notes and ruminations often do not become full outlines.Aside from background research l tend to do tons of notes as l develop the characters and plots.lt can seem to take forever at times.Whether it has improved my novels l guess will be told once they come out. lt's hard for me to judge them fairly.l'de probably revise them for eternity if l let myself.
I've written 4 novels, 3 published and I usually start out with a question. In the Adventures of Knight-Hood the premise was the question "What would happen in real life if someone donned a mask and tried to fight crime like the comic book characters?"
In "St. Augustine Vampire" I asked the question "What would happen if a real live vampire began killing people in the 21st century?
In "The 13th Cycle" I asked the question "What would happen if a real life miracle worker showed up in the 21st century.
In each case I had a main character and many supporting characters and just began writing the story with only the loosest of outlines.
My writing style is more like a game of dominoes. I just push the first one over and the rest is a long chain reaction. Each reaction prompts a series of reactions from the other characters.
In each case I had no idea how it would end until I was about 3 quarters through it. Very often I had no idea what each character was about to say until my pen started moving.
I have tried the outline idea but have never been able to use it in practice because it would be like trying to see an entire chess game from the first move. I can't really see more than 2 moves ahead.
I wish I could plan out a story and work with an outline but it just doesn't work for me.
I mention this simply because I don't want young writers to get stuck on the outline and not be able to get past it to write the tale.
Sometimes you just have to let the story tell itself.
Omen: Get in line, I have been working like crazy also. I have two major projects I have to finish and hopefully everything slows down. Haven't had time to log into the board... I actually miss it. It feels good popping my head in to see what's going on.

g40t90yes: Good Morning. Now I am no political activist, but with is going on in today's activist world, I have a question. Last Sunday Vice President Pence walked out of a Colts Football game because the Players took a knee. I would like to read your View about this

g40t90yes: Continue. Now The NFL Owners (Jones-Cowboys, Ross-Dolphins) are going to demand their players stand for the Anthem. Again just thinking out loud. Couple of weeks ago Owners (Jones) knelt with players. Now you are pulling back. Why??

g40t90yes: One more thing. Some people view The NFL Draft and NBA Draft as a modern day or fashionable auction block for black young men. Thoughts!!! Please.

The Muse: Im sure there are going to be a lot of thoughts on this...why not start a thread on the topic under the "chat" board. It will be easier for everyone to read and comment on it there. This shoutbox is kinda cumbersome to have to scroll through to read stuff.

The Muse: Where does the time go?
Nov 7, 2017 9:26:16 GMT -5
Omen: I don't know... some say time goes around in circles - for me, its just a dreary long squiggly line, in some places in its a smile, in others... its not.
